When is the right time?

We wanted to get up to Idaho the day after Christmas, but we got pounded with snow, so we stayed home. I mentioned to my mother that it might be the perfect opportunity to undecorate the house from Christmas. She was shocked. Now my mom is one who enjoys the decorations well into January. I think if my dad would let her leave her tree up until summer, she would. But I really look forward to the feeling of a clean, decluttered house after Christmas.

My mom also mentioned that it would feel like Christmas as long as I let the kids keep their new stuff out to play with. I had already made them put it all away on Christmas day afternoon- I thought we were driving to Idaho the next day and didn't want to come home to the giant mess! Maybe I'm a Scrooge or my Christmas spirit is fleeting. When is the right time to take down all the decorations? Is there a standard? I need to feel validated in packing up all the trappings I guess. I just know that to usher in a new year, I like to have the old one all cleaned up.

Ryan made me go to the rec center today and walk around the track. We certainly can't walk outside since there's about 14 inches of snow. I'm still catching a little bit in my gait, but doing so much better overall. (Janet, I hope your leg can heal quickly too.) I think I'll go decide which holiday decorations are not going to make the repacking phase at all. My goal is to have one less box this year to store. Bah humbug, everybody! (just kidding, of course).

It gets eerier and eerier.... check out the last paragraph of my latest post today. I think I even used the word "trappings."
No, you are not a Christmas hater. We (by that I mean John) have been packing up bits of Christmas all day. It's lovely, it's done, let's move on.
Maybe the leave-up-Christmas gene skipped a generation with us. (You know that my mother left our tree up past Easter one year, right?)
You are absolutely right to pack it up. January is calling and do we really want to start the new year already behind?

My favorite part of Christmas day is putting all the new things away! I've been caught cleaning out drawers, throwing things in the DI pile and re-arranging cupboards to have just the right place for the new things. I love it!! Today I made everyone clean out their closet, drawers and lockers and get rid of all the old things that I replaced with new one's on Christmas.
I'd be taking down today if it were not for the fact we're hosting the Richhart Christmas part on Monday the 29th and I figured I should keep the tree up for that but I've already started stock piling things throughout the house. I'm with you. Clean house for the New Year. Besides we've already looked at this stuff for almost a month! So hurray for you....we are kindred spirits that have had enough Christmas spirit to dust and arrange and re-arrange for the last 30 days!

I am thrilled that you are organized and motivated enough to get your stuff down. I am not against it, but unfortunately, I had too many leftover treats to eat today. So I couldn't possibly put them down long enough to get anything done. When you are finished getting it all down and put away, maybe you could come and give me a hand?

I'm with ya girl. I love Christmas and Christmas decorations and all, but we like to get it cleaned up soon after. We like change and we have been looking at the same garland and shiny red balls for a while now.
Sorry to hear about all your snow and having to cancel your Idaho trip. Bummer.

I feel like you do, when it's over, it's over! After the Big Day, I feel like it's time to take back my territory, declutter and d e c o m p r e s s! I love January.

I took mine down the day after. But I was sick of telling the kids to be careful! Every time the tree jiggled, I had a panic attack.

But... I thought I'd leave up the stockings, and other decorations. Well Sat, Jack ran by, and pulled the stocking holder(cast iron) on to his face. So...they came down too.

Not Bah humbug...just practical!! ;)

I get it too. Everything in my house is almost down. Sorry to hear you didn't make the idaho trip.

You crack me up! Yes, we all matched because Santa brought us matching (sort of matching) jammies. We were glad he chose something that we could wear all year and not something with Christmas figures and such on them.

I was so happy today to come home and find our Christmas tree gone. My house didn't even get decorated this year. Argh!
