Stairway to Chaos

This past weekend was my blissful, relaxing, enjoyable scrapbooking weekend with all my friends. I'll be sure to blog about that experience when I collect my thoughts.

Meanwhile, while I was off cropping and eating all kinds of goodies, the kids and Ryan were home enduring a floor refinishing and stair replacement. What was supposed to be an easy day-and-a-half job turned into a major ordeal. Apparently, the last person that worked on our staircase decided to ignore building codes! When our wood guy took off the treads and risers to replace them, he couldn't put them back on the existing frames because it wouldn't be to code and would therefore be illegal for him to do. So he had to redo the size of each stair, recut the spindles for the banister, and basically do a lot more work than he had bargained for.

Ryan and the kids were not allowed in the kitchen or on the staircase. Our fridge was functional, but out on the deck. It's amazing how much further the trip to the fridge is when you have to go outside. It snowed, of course, so it was too cold for most of our produce and it all froze.

Ryan did take them out to eat every night though- so the kids were okay with that. They also spent an evening at Ryan's parents to be out of the way. But they also didn't have a dishwasher, so anything they did use they had to hand wash! Oh the horrors. My kids didn't realize how lucky they were before. But the floor and stairs look great now and we just need to repaint the mouldings and risers. It may take me a while to get that done. Enjoy these before and after photos. The 5th is supposed to say old carpet on the stairs.

WOW!! Very nice remodeling project! I can absolutely validate all your remodeling horror, we have been through all of that too! What a nightmare! But it looks great, I will have to come over and look at it in person! Thanks for the comments! The sheep are great, aren't they? My mom has to drive by almost daily to see the baby sheep. I just love 'em. Tell the fam hello. -Alyssa

OH I LOVE IT!!!!! I am sorry for the ordeal to get it all done. It doesn't sound fun (well the eating out every night does but that's about it). But the results are FABULOUS!!! I can't wait to see it in person.
