October Cabin Trip 2011

October really went by in a blur.  I spent a week in Texas with my sister and new baby, which was delightful!  Then Ryan spent a week in Peru for work.  Rachel had oral surgery and the other kids were their usually busy selves.  So when the kids had an extra day out of school on the 28th, we decided to head up to the cabin for one last blast before the snow socked it in.

Warming feet by the fire while talking to Grandma M. on the phone.
Our loaded up car- six kids in there!
On Friday we went to Big Elk Creek to kayak and play by the water.  It was way too cold to get in, but so great to be outside.

Ryan and the girls.  Rachel hated the sun in her eyes, so had a hard time making a natural face.
My handsome guy.  He's usually behind the camera, but I made him sit on the log for a minute to catch his picture.

Setting up a  little picnic area that was sheltered from the breeze.
Jared invited two of his friends who are twins to go with us.  They all went out to fish and play on the dock in the middle of the lake.  Luckily none of them fell in to that freezing water. Love this picture of them going to explore.  Teenagers are really just little kids in big bodies.
We were eating Chex mix, relaxing in our picnic spot, and the boys were skipping rocks, when we heard what Ryan and I thought must have been thunder.  Since the boys had walked a little farther around the edge of the lake, they were in a better position to see what had really happened.  They came running back to us and told us there had been an explosion on the road at the other end of the lake.  So we ran around the corner and saw this...
I called 911 and reported the explosion and they directed us to go over there and see if we could figure out what had happened and how many injured there were.  I was, frankly, terrified but we got in the car and drove about a mile over to the highway.
Miraculously, there were no injuries!  A fuel tanker took the corner too fast and rolled his second tank.  It detached, slid along the guard rail and exploded.  There were no cars in the opposite lane at the time, and the driver of the truck was able to get his other tank out of the way.  You can see him still on the road ahead of the fire.  The fire also burned for a few hours in the roadway and down the other side of the embankment, but never traveled to any tree areas where it could have gotten much bigger.  We gave our report to the first responding officer (who happened to know my brother, Andy) and went back to our kids who were a little freaked out.  Once everyone calmed down (the girls- the boys were digging it), we went back to recreating.
Good news for cabin-goers:  They are starting to work on the pilings for the bridge at the bottom of the dam.
We got up early Sunday morning so we could get back for church.  We were cleaned, loaded and in the car by 7:30 am.  I was starting my new calling as primary chorister and didn't want to be a total flake my first week.  The kids were all good sports even though it was tough to leave in such a rush, but when we got to the switchbacks, we were rewarded by this beautiful view of Swan Valley.
It was a great weekend!
